Most projects arise from a client’s desire to create a change that leads to an improvement in facilities, functions or even a spatial experience. It is within the Project Managers remit to ensure this drive for facility, functional or experiential improvement does not lead to a degradation of the environment. It also behoves on the Project Manager to ensuring that the development can be easily maintained and serviced by the resources and skill base available within the area.
Most construction professionals with over twenty years experience have seen projects they worked on in the early part of their career, either ‘mothballed’ or demolished. In most cases the buildings remain structurally sound but the services and the finishes have either become obsolete or render the building too expensive to manage and maintain. Sustainability, for me, is about building timeless authenticity in the function, use and experience of a building, so that, in the well worn cliché, it would withstand the test of time!
